Alteration services boom to fix cheap wedding dress bought onlineTailors and dressmakers around the country are getting more and more alteration jobs as brides discover the bargain dresses they snapped up online are a dodgy fit, or look nothing like the advertised pictures.
Brisbane dressmaker Jennifer Gifford said she no longer accepts alteration jobs on dresses bought online, despite getting monthly inquiries from brides-to-be.
"The dresses these girls get very rarely represent the images on the websites, or they don't fit but generally they're too small and I can't do anything with a dress that's too small or too short.
"I don't want people to think they can buy a dress online for $50 and they can come to someone like Jennifer Gifford and have it all fixed up."
Ms Gifford, whose own custom made dresses sell for an average of $3500, said "lots and lots of tears have been shed" in her store by disappointed bargain-hunting brides.
"One particular girl came in and lost the plot in my studio, she had spent about $300 on the dress online and . it did not fit her in any way, shape or form and it arrived two or three weeks before the wedding," she said.
"She had no way of organising another dress and she brought it to me to see if I could salvage it and there was no way I could, because it was too small and too short. She had a minor meltdown."
Ms Gifford said brides on a budget should opt for an affordable off-the-rack dress they could try on locally, although a custom made gown was worth the extra money.
"What girls need to know is if they really want to have that special memory of their wedding day then it's worth investing in having something properly made for them," she said. cheap wedding dresses
